Cines de Cuba

There are always a few ingredients that go into making a great photo series, and in this case they came together just so:
A photographer with the right mix of eye, time and patience, documenting a country with the history and vibe of Cuba, through a specific cultural touch point, in this case the islands old forgotten cinemas.
Good ingredients, beautiful result.

Cuba had a love affair with cinemas and in 1958 there were a total of 511 cinemas, and with 130 just in Havana, there were more in the city than in New York or Paris.
Today only around 19 cinema halls are still used as cinemas, with the rest either being repurposed or forgotten, and it’s capturing that decay which makes this series so beautiful.

Photographer Maria Carolina Sandretto travelled around the island over the course of 4 years capturing the faded but beautiful buildings and has documented them on this website.
