Even if Nobody Cares
“I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares.”
― Saul Bass
In his case though, a lot of people did end up caring. But maybe that’s why he was so good and why people cared? Because he created for his own approval, not others.
Not only is it amazing to see such a coherent and stunning body of work broken down technically, but it’s always good to have a reference for creativity for the love of it, more than the love of others opinions.
Saul Bass passed away in 1996, so he missed the social media revolution which seems to have ushered in this movement of creating beautiful things, hoping that everyone cares.
Maybe the culture of creating for the likes, the comments, the chance of virality and the ego shot of views needs some Saul Bass intervention?
