A few years ago we found ourselves hundreds of miles into the center of Zimbabwe, building a community center for a village, where the only tools and materials we had were what we carried with us and what we could find in the surrounding bush. That story is a whole other blog post, but it gave us a new appreciation for masters like Francis Kere, who have developed a new expression of architecture, born from Africa and perfectly suited to the challenges presented by the land and the environment.
It’s impressive to understand some of Kere’s perspectives, how he approaches his craft, and to then see the beautiful work that comes from it.
