Slash's Lockdown List #1

The whole world’s on lockdown right now and while we can’t discover anything outside of our homes there’s a whole lot to discover on the magical internet machine.

Here’s the links to the stuff that’s been inspiring us, helping us pass the time, challenging us, encouraging us and occasionally freaking us out.

Enjoy!

I’ve watched this video easily more than 10 times in the last few days, and it’s 11 minutes long so that’s nearly two hours of one dude drumming and it’s still blowing my mind.
For anyone who knows a bit about music this is a freakishly impressive video from a technical perspective with all the polyrhythms going on. For those that don’t know much about music go to the comments or search videos of other drummers reacting to this video.
How his brain is processing all that information and then getting 2 arms and 2 legs to do everything that they are doing, while playing with 3 other musicians and staying in time and sounding that good, is just ridiculous.

I found this song ages ago but forgot about it for a pretty long time. It’s mostly instrumental, but the way it starts off pretty slowly and towards the middle just ticks off with the guitar and becomes this incredibly uplifting/feel-good song is perfect for right now--gives me a push to keep going and to do an even better job than i have been AND doing it with the best attitude

This Netflix Docu-series is gold. I have never felt so entertained by a (sur)real story that has all the movie genres: documentary, adventure, comedy, crime, thriller, romance, action.. and even musical videos! It genuinely feels like a Coen brothers movie come to life.
I have to advise that the whole thing is really stupid and most of the people in there are really eccentric and bizarre, but I think the documentary does a good job of denouncing the animal cruelty, the human manipulation, big egos, addiction and the problem with guns in America.
So yeah, I have really enjoyed watching it and digesting everything I saw while not watching it, it created a bit of a parallel world that I miss. Actually, I wouldn’t mind watching it again, I think it’s a good escape from reality.

Every day I give myself 20 mins to watch Cooking hacks.
Every time I cook, I try to find news ways on having amazing presentation. So I watch these videos to check out ideas on how to make cool dishes from simple ingredients
Especially in the lockdown, cooking for me is therapy, and making it presentable just adds the pressure of pretending I'm cooking for an audience

Down Dog is a great yoga app, and it's free up to May 1st. The best about it is that you can choose the lengh of the practice, the music, yoga style and can even focus on specific parts that you wish to practice more as backbends or core strengh. For the yoga fans totally worth a try.

_Clinton

I have been enjoying this song lately, it's upbeat and lifting my spirits.

Why? because:

And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousands times again

In the last week I read “Creative Calling” by Chase Jarvis which is quite perfect for creatives stuck in quarantine.
And why is it good? Well, to be honest, it’s not crazy good but still worth the read. It’s a very motivational book to get you out there doing stuff.
Also, I’ve been chasing KOM’s when I’m not working so I guess that’s interesting.

Two things that keep me sane:
1. Always looking forward to enjoying my breakfast every morning
2. And ive been obsessed with this. I think its become a morning ritual, i play it on repeat a few times then i go to her desk concerts. it’s kinda weird but it keeps me going.

_Abi

I'm watching this Youtube channel to keep me sane.
They are such incredible people, super genuine with a nice heart. I love their outlook on life and their perspective on discomfort - it's something that I try to base all my decisions on as well. It's nice to be transported to the random-est of places and hear stories about people you will never meet. Makes the 4 walls of this room feel less confined.

_Priscila

The beat keeps me going…

This channel is nice to listen/see on the side. Hearing designers/artists/agencies talk about their style, how they work etc gives me inspiration and ideas.

_Nuno

I like it because, after watching the documentary, it was great to listen how things were happening in the back, in a non cinematographic way. They are genuine, with a clear vision, and above all brave.

Before going to sleep I’m reading two books:
1. Anyone Can Do It: Building Coffee Republic from Our Kitchen Table - 57 Real Life Laws on Entrepreneurship

2. Heavy Duty Sewing: Making Backpacks and Other Stuff

And I’m also painting but not super often, some works u can find on my instagram account @ljiljanatodorovicart, and doing this workout.

I just started reading Speculative Everything by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby.
I am still in the early chapters, but it is a book that I have been intending to read for a while. I wanted to understand the meaning of speculating and asking “What if” questions without falling into the traps of future and technology cliches. How to use design as a tool to critique and question certain limitations.
The first chapters so far are identifying the reasons why design transformed from being radical and critical to a market-led “slightly” superficial designs and it is defining what is the meaning of conceptual design ( a form of design that is close to conceptual art, it is away from the realm of reality and closer to the realm of fiction. uses ideals to question, provoke and inspire)

Next on the list would probably be Victore, Who Died and Made you Boss
or The design of everyday things by Don Norman.
